What is holistic healing?
Holistic healing is getting more and more attention these days. People with chronic conditions are looking for more than just relief from symptoms.
It’s estimated that about half the people in the United States are suffering from diabetes.
The number one reason people go to a doctor is a complaint of pain. Sometimes it’s inexplicable.
The instances of cancer are increasing.
More than 50% of people in developed countries are overweight or obese and suffer many side effects of that condition.
What happens when you go to a doctor for treatment? He looks in his medical books for a treatment of the symptoms. Often, it’s a prescription for some kind of drug or other medication.
He then hands out the prescription and sends you on your way.
What would a doctor do to treat you in a holistic way?
You would be counseled about your life habits that may be contributing to your condition. He would advise changes in eating habits, exercise, meditation, and even attitude changes.
Holistic healing is about the whole person. It’s about a mind-body connection.
Many religions teach about eating habits, meditation, connection to God or the infinite and even daily exercise habits. It’s something that has been taught for centuries.
Today’s fast-paced lifestyles can create imbalances.
A typical lifestyle in this day and age consists of living by clocks and deadlines. We have instant breakfast, fast food lunches and pizza delivery for dinner because we’re too tired to cook.
Both parents are often needed to provide for the financial needs of a family leaving the kids at the hands of bought and paid for day care.
Families are fractured. There is an ever-increasing number of single parent families. It’s a stressful lifestyle. It makes it especially difficult to have the time and resources to have a healthy lifestyle.
It doesn’t take long before your lifestyle affects your health and well-being.
I know way too many people needing anti-depressants and pain pills just to get through a day.
Others can’t even function without a bunch of caffeine to give them the energy they need.
There are several types of holistic medical resources.
Holistic medicine doesn’t necessarily replace allopathic or modern medicine. Surgeons are still needed. Prescription drugs may also be needed for conditions needing critical immediate care. But, it could work together with holistic or more natural treatments to help cure chronic conditions and to prevent relapses.
Some of the alternative forms of treatments that are more holistic include: aromatherapy, Ayurveda medicine, natural diet. exercise. spiritual counseling, midwifery, vibrational medicine, homeopathy. acupuncture. naturopathic medicine. bodywork. energy-based therapies. prayerful intention, prayer circles, therapeutic massage, religion, meditation, martial arts and Chinese medicine.
Integrative medicine is increasingly being accepted.
I’ve seen miraculous things happen when modern medicine is combined with alternative holistic treatments.
When I was in my child-bearing years, I suffered greatly from morning sickness. It never dissipated or went away for the whole pregnancy.
I was even told by one physician that he didn’t want to give me pre-birth examinations because he didn’t want to be responsible for me.
I started thinking about acupuncture. Since there were no practitioners anywhere near me in Alaska, I grabbed a phone book and found one in Seattle.
So, my husband and I journeyed to Seattle and I got some acupuncture from an old German MD who had converted to holistic medicine. He told us that he had been a doctor for years and he was tired of treating people for symptoms and not seeing them cured.
The acupuncture treatment was completely successful. I later give birth to a perfectly healthy baby girl in the privacy of my own home.
We have a long way to go.
Right now, most insurance companies will not pay for acupuncture unless it’s done by a physician and only if it’s for pain. (Most physicians don’t do it).
At least it pays for chiropractors and physical therapy. Some will pay for massage if it’s in conjunction with physical therapy.
More doctors are becoming familiar with herbal medicine at least so they don’t prescribe medications that don’t mix.
They are still suspicious of herbs. Most will poo-pooh things like CBD hemp oils or Chinese patent herbs.
But they won’t be able to ignore it forever.
